Parenting

Specialty Area: Parenting Support

Some Common issues for parents with young children are:

  • bedtime issues, children who won’t stay in bed
  • fussy eaters
  • tantrums and oppositional behaviour
  • power struggles
  • anxious children

Common issues for primary aged to teenagers are:

  • school refusal
  • over use of technology
  • anxiety, depression
  • fighting with siblings
  • disengagement from family
  • power struggles
  • Risk taking behaviours – drugs, alcohol, self-harm
  • Violence and aggressive behaviour

I am passionate about assisting parents to overcome the challenges many parents experience with their children of all age groups. Research indicates most parents at some time or another reach out for support with parenting, this is not surprising as parents love their children and will do almost anything to ensure their children are okay and reaching their potential. There is no such thing as a perfect parent!

While children bring parents such love and joy, they can also push our buttons at times, it’s understandable that parents sometimes feel in despair and don’t know where to turn.

There is an expression that “every behaviour is a communication”, I work with parents to debunk their children’s behaviour… what is your child/teens behaviour telling you that they need? Often small changes parents can make in the way they respond can lead to big changes!

I will support parents to feel more empowered and confident in understanding the child/teens developmental stages and internal world. Parents can learn how to parent as a team, reducing the stress and conflict that often arises between the parents when nothing they do seems to be working.

I will help you discover how to connect with your child/teen to strengthen the bond and your influence over them, leading to way less conflict and way more harmony and contentment in the family.

Separated Parents

I work with separated parents from a child focused framework, which means I assist separated parents to understand how to best support their children when families live in two households. Often the conflict between the parents is ongoing, this can be very overwhelming for parents and children including teens. Some common issues children and parents struggle with after separation are –

  • Poor communication between households
  • Child/teen refusing to spend time with one parent
  • Parents re-partnering or moving away
  • Grief and loss
  • Losing extended family relationships and support
  • Moving between households and not having all of their belongings
  • Disrupted social networks and friendships
  • Loss of hope for the future – depression, anxiety, worry
  • Regressed behaviour
  • Falling behind at school, poor peer relationships

I can work with parents individually, providing a safe space to work through some of the challenges. At times one parent is not willing to engage, in these circumstances, I can support the willing parent to build their resources and confidence in choosing to be the reasonable parent for the sake of their child/teen.
